How to wear… knee high socks

This feature has been a little interrupted with me being away and then getting back into the swing of things but I have a little list of items for this feature now so I’m going to do my best to publish one every Thursday. If there’s any trend or particular item of clothing you want added to the list, then get into contact with me – either leave a comment, email me or send me a tweet. Everything will get put on the list.

Knee high socks is a trend that 2010 has seen and I was asked to feature them on the blog because people were unsure how they could wear them and if it was considered too “tarty” to wear them. Well, let’s take a look!

Daisy Lowe is one of my favourite little fashionistas and these 2 photos show 2 very different ways of wearing knee highs and looking good.
The first, teaming a floaty crocheted dress and some classic Mary Jane’s for a sophisticated look and the second, opting for some flat ballet shoes and bright prints to give a more girly and laid back feel.
I really love both of these looks.

Alexa Chung does knee-high festival fashion at this year’s Glastonbury with a very easy to re-create look.

  • Nautical striped top
  • Denim shorts
  • Leather jacket
  • Simple, long pendant necklace
  • Plain wellies
  • and black knee highs

All of those available in all the good high street stores! Though, I can’t actually guarantee that it will make you look like Alexa, get her actual wardrobe or get you a boyfriend that looks like hers ;)

But of course, this trend can very easily go wrong. Isn’t that right, Jordan and Lindsay?

I know monochrome is kind of always in fashion, Jordan, but this is not what is meant by that at all.

Lindsay, Lindsay, Lindsay. Oh dear. A number of things that confuse me about this outfit, starting with the feet. Slippers? Outside? No.
Then the skirt. Did you make that out of a bin bag?
And the blazer and tee don’t work well at all with that outfit.
At least you’ve got your lovely, natural hair colour here!

A list of knee-high do’s and don’ts then…

DO:

  • Choose dark colours – blacks and greys will look a lot better and those colours go with everything
  • Wear with a smaller heel rather than your high heels – this will help stray away from that “tart” connotation
  • Make sure your dress/skirt/shorts are above your knee so there’s a big enough gap between the hemlines and the top of the socks – you’ll end up looking to dowdy otherwise

DON’T:

  • Have socks that are too tight around the top – you don’t want to create sausage legs
  • Copy Jordan or Li-Lo – stay clear of white/lighter colours/bright socks (unless dressing up when it may be acceptable)
  • Try and re-create the school/preppy look as a daytime outfit – we’re trying to demolish the negative connotations remember!

EDIT: The other day I went to Birmingham and after doing this blog I decided to embrace the trend myself. This is what I wore.

I really liked this outfit and I’m definitely going to be wearing it more often!

I hope this helps everyone somewhat. Next week’s “How to wear…” will be crop tops so look out for that!

    hello!

knee-socks are very much this season and for the coming fall/autumn and winter seasons! i am more a vintage fashion admirer from the 60s to 80s (but mostly 60s) and seeing some of these outfits worn with long socks are very cool! i also run an internet forum which features many celebrities wearing these socks! i find there are many guys like me share this similar liking too but many don’t openly admit it. if anyone wants to join this forum and discuss some of the outfits, me and my community will warmly welcome you in and i’ll reply again on here with the website address!

i hope we can try to keep long socks fashionable for every day purpose like it is in the far east! and with the growing trend of females developing a vintage style, maybe socks can be worn more often! the preppy look is often seen as the most simple and effective but wearing them with cute floral or lace dress is worth a thought! just make sure the colour of the socks is in some way part of the others you have put on!

from my experiences, they must fit the females’ leg nicely, stay neat and must be worn with short skirt, dress or shorts! a pair of knee boots often is a very nice addition! but pvc clothes like jordan really do not work! other than that, as long you females feel good in them and like them wearing them, you’ll always win a vote from me! the best place for the sock must be just below the knee or just above!

thank you for this interesting article! and thank you for allowing me to post on here! :)

  6. this is a really great post… knee high socks are a great look but SO hard to pull off!! I think they’re difficult to pull of unless you have stick thin legs!! I’m fairly slim but I struggle sometimes!!
